“HotPot” of Opportunities in the F&B Industry
On 13th May 2013, TiE Dubai held an event entitled Hotpot of Opportunities, a spotlight on the Food & Beverage Industry. In the esteemed panel, were Mohamad Bitar- Founder and Owner of Just Falafel, Jason Myers- Managing Director of Jumeirah Restaurants and GM of Operation of the Jumeirah Group, Chef Anil Kumar, a Senior Member of the Emirates Culinary Guild and Manfred Steichler, Owner of Oregano Restaurants. The event was hosted by Sajith Ansar, CEO of Spice Holdings and TiE Dubai Board of Director.
It was definitely a feast of knowledge from discussions on opening a restaurant, importance of location, franchising, innovation, and empowering your staff. As was very well said by Jason Myers of the Jumeirah Group on keeping staff motivated; “It’s all about recruiting the right people it’s also about developing concepts and developing a way and culture. Building teams and invest in your people because they are the face of your business and your brand”. When asked about the importance of location Manfred Steichler mentioned, “when opening our second outlet, it had to be a combination of two; exposure to office crowd and the vicinity to communities” and adding sound advise “you have to look at your concept and be clear to who does it cater.
Once you know that, then it will be easy to determine your location”. Chef Anil Kumar clearly stated when asked about maintaining consistency in the kitchen. He narrated step by step what has to be done mentioning that the menu should be short and sweet, otherwise create a system specific menu to maintain order. Sajith posed a very important question to Mohamed on what best way to use social media and asked for some tips. Mohamed reiterated the importance of the medium stating: “For us it was a stepping stone and if it was not for social media they would not be where they are today. Also saying “we were lucky when we started social media no one else had used it in the F&B industry”. Specifically Facebook where they get 200-300 queries on Franchising daily. The event ended with an extension of question and answer portion until the end of the evening as everyone was inspired to know more about the industry. TiE Dubai has planned a whole series of events, workshops and panel discussions to inspire and educate aspiring entrepreneurs.
